FRACKING
(CONVENTIONAL)

Hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” is a well stimulation process used to maximize the extraction of underground resources including oil and natural gas. Hydraulic fracturing involves the pressurized injection of a mixture of water, chemicals, and sand in underground formations to allow natural gas and oil to flow more freely from rock pores to the surface.​

THERMAL EOR/
STEAMFLOODING

Thick and viscous oils with API gravity less than 15 are difficult to mobilize from the producing formation. Oil and gas production facilities located on heavy oil reserves will utilize steam flooding, steam assisted gravity drainage or cyclic steam cycling to increase the recovery rate of these heavy oils. This involves steam injection to reduce the oil’s viscosity, thereby increasing the recovery rate of heavy oil.

CHEMICAL EOR

Chemical flooding relies on the addition of one or more chemical compounds to an injected fluid either to reduce the interfacial tension between the reservoir oil and the injected fluid or to improve the sweep efficiency of the injected fluid.

There are three general methods in chemical flooding technology. The first is polymer flooding, in which a large macromolecule is used to increase the displacing fluid viscosity. This leads to improved sweep efficiency in the reservoir. The second and third methods, micellar–polymer and alkaline flooding, make use of chemicals that reduce the interfacial tension between an oil and a displacing fluid.

SHALE OIL DEVELOPMENT

Unconventional oil and natural gas play a key role in Indonesia's clean energy future. At present, Indonesia has vast reserves of such resources that are commercially viable as a result of advances in horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing technologies. These technologies enable greater access to oil and natural gas in shale formations. Responsible development of Indonesia's shale gas resources offers important economic, energy security, and environmental benefits.

Fracking in horizontal drilling, has made previously-inaccessible natural gas and petroleum resources in tight” or unconventional” reservoirs producible in economic quantities.
